West Barnstable, MA –Thursday, May 17th, 200 supporters of the YMCA Cape Cod came together at Willow Bend Country Club to recognize and celebrate the graduating class of the Y Achievers Program.
The Y Achievers Program is a Youth Development Program for teens that focuses on post-secondary education and career exploration. Focusing on 5 Pillars – Academics, College Knowledge, Positive Relationships, Life Skills, and Positive Identity – Y Achievers from Barnstable High School, ages 12-19, meet weekly at Hyannis Youth & Community Center to learn about different careers, by interacting with professionals sharing their personal journey and how they got to where they are, to plan and lead community service projects, and so much more. The Y Achievers program provides students with caring, responsible adult role models and the skills and confidence to develop goals and a plan for life beyond high school. Y Achievers are the first in their families to go onto post-secondary education.
As a Youth Development Program at the YMCA Cape Cod, this program is supported entirely through contributions from local corporations and foundations. 2017-2018 Program Sponsors include Cape Cod Substance Abuse Prevention Fund, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Santander, the Cape & Islands United Way, and many more.
This year’s graduates have each successfully been accepted to the following schools: Central Connecticut State University, Cape Cod Community College, Johnson & Whales, UMass Amherst, Marymount University, University of Connecticut, UMass Boston, Bridgewater State University, UMass Dartmouth, Emanuel College, and the US Marine Corps.
